Hearing aids vs. personal sound amplifiers
By PAMUINI ยท Published September 11, 2026
The intended use matters
Hearing aids are medical devices intended to help people with hearing loss. Personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are intended for people with normal hearing who want to amplify sounds in particular situations. They are not interchangeable simply because both make sounds louder.
What does OTC mean?
In the United States, OTC hearing aids are intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Buying without a prescription does not make an OTC hearing aid the same product as a general-purpose amplifier.
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the device's stated intended use?
- Who is it designed for, and what limitations appear on the label?
- Are the exact model and instructions available to read?
Do not use appearance or a low price alone to decide whether a device fits your hearing needs.
